Overview

The Hundred Acre Woods was a Philadelphia-area folk rock band formed in late 2009, rooted in the Chester County and West Philly DIY scenes. Known for high-energy live shows, rotating instrumentation, and emotionally charged songwriting, the band blended folk traditions with punk urgency and basement-show chaos.

Members frequently swapped instruments and vocal duties, incorporating banjo, mandolin, field organ, and electric guitar into sweaty house shows across Philadelphia, Newark (DE), and surrounding college towns.

Contemporary press regularly described the band as “rowdy folk,” positioning them somewhere between folk-punk energy and basement-show catharsis. Local coverage also confirms they opened for Ra Ra Riot at a free Bryn Mawr College show, which helps show how quickly they were moving beyond tiny rooms while still staying rooted in DIY spaces.

Interviews & Press

In a 2012 interview with The Temple News, the band described their sound as constantly evolving, shaped heavily by Philadelphia’s basement show culture. Recording sessions ranged from cabins in the Poconos to closets lined with cedar wood, emphasizing atmosphere over polish.

“It’s hard to describe. I say rowdy folk. The energy of punk and the wisdom of folk.”
— Zack Reinhardt, The Temple News

The Deli later featured the band around a live-acoustic “All I Love” session and noted their Tin Angel headliner with Former Belle and Steady Hands. A New Jersey Stage preview for their Asbury Lanes date called them “Philadelphia’s resident rowdy folk band” and tied that show to the “Where In The World Is Kooger San Diego” summer tour.

Archive Status

Recordings: relatively strong. Most formal releases survive through Bandcamp or later uploads.

Show history: partial. Enough survives to map major years and tours, but many house-show dates and venues remain undocumented or only partially confirmed.

Press coverage: limited but useful. Temple News, The Deli, and New Jersey Stage are the clearest surviving coverage points.

Visual archive: partial. Cover art survives better than flyers and candid live photography.

Media Inventory

  • Bandcamp release art for all major releases
  • 2013/2014 tour poster material, including the “Where In The World Is Kooger San Diego” poster
  • Known live photo documentation including Moonbase-era photography
  • The Deli / Schuylkill live acoustic “All I Love” session
  • Later YouTube resurfacing of Entmoot

Sources

  • Bandcamp release pages and track credits
  • The Temple News feature / interview
  • The Deli feature on “All I Love” live-acoustic session and Tin Angel show
  • New Jersey Stage preview for Asbury Lanes / summer tour
  • Concert Archives listings for later date confirmation and partial tour trails

Missing / Unverified

  • A planned full-length was mentioned in 2012 press but does not appear to have surfaced in the expected form.
  • Many house-show venues, exact addresses, and support bills remain incomplete.
  • Some tour dates from posters still need venue-level confirmation.
  • More flyer scans, video, and candid live photos likely exist in private collections.
  • A fuller oral history from members would likely clarify lineup changes and unreleased material.

This page documents known releases, interviews, performances, media, and surviving visual material. Like many DIY bands of the era, records are incomplete and actively being archived.
